Those AMMO guys are so strong! OK, maybe that’s a little exaggerated.
Yup, I was an AMMO troop. We built the bombs the fighter jocks and bomber pilots dropped on the bad guys. We also built the rockets, napalm and CBUs and all other sorts of fun munitions. Remember those little flechette arrows which came shooting out by the hundreds from rockets? Tough stuff if you were a bad guy.
AMMO troops worked way out in the bomp dump, sometimes it was even off base in case an “incident” happened. We worked our asses off and played just as hard off duty. If you got into a tussle at an NCO club, all you had to do was yell, “AMMO!” and you had help coming from several directions. Great job, great buds … even to this day, almost 40 years later. Ya gotta love those AMMO troops!
We were sometimes referred to as “bomb jockies” but were always considered a prestigeous group and well respected. Munitions Maintenance Forever!!! Can’t say I ever worked out with the ammo though. Tossing 750’s around on trailers was tough enough. Remember the occasional 1000 pounders coming into the bays?
Don’t remember the 1000 lbs ‘ers but I do remember the occasional 2000 lbs ers up country at the fighter bases. Good times … thanks for visiting!
Hey, speaking of nicknames, how about “BB Stackers” and “Muzzle F*ckers?”
